When the fight is over and the cat is dead, your only priority is to move your dog away. After moving him, look closely at his head and feel through the fur for any small nicks or bite marks.
Cat claws are thin and carry bacteria that cause fast, painful infections under a dog’s skin, so finding these tiny puncture wounds early stops the area from swelling or turning into a deep infection.
It is about protecting your dog’s health and knowing what to do before you face police reports or lawsuits from the neighbors.
Dogs and Cats – Understanding the Attack
When the dog catches the cat, it is usually a matter of prey drive or protecting his territory. For many breeds (from Terriers and Sighthounds to large Guardians) a fast-moving target triggers an immediate chase.
This isn’t just a “lack of socialization“; it is his nature, and it is very hard to stop once he starts the hunt.
Preventing future incidents isn’t about “understanding feelings”—it is about strong fences, secure gates, and a short leash.
You must stop the next attack by keeping them apart.
Stay Calm
Once the attack is over, you need to stay calm so the dog doesn’t get even more fired up. If you start screaming, panicking, or hitting him, you are only adding fuel to the fire in an already dangerous situation.
The dog in “hunt mode” or territorial defense is running on pure adrenaline; your noise can trigger him to grip harder or even turn that aggression toward you or anyone nearby.
You need a clear head to check for injuries and to secure the area. Get the leash, move him away from the spot, and only then deal with the situation.
Get the Dog Out of Sight
Once the attack happens, you must get the dog away from the spot instantly.
Do not stay there to “see if the cat is okay” while holding a dog that is pulling and trying to break free. If you are in the yard, put him in a kennel, a crate, or inside the house.
If you are on the street, shorten the leash and move him around the corner or behind a car.
The goal is to break the visual contact. As long as the dog can see the cat, his adrenaline will stay at its peak and he will keep trying to finish the hunt.
Call a Vet
If the cat is alive, wrap her in a heavy towel. She needs professional help because she may have internal injuries you cannot see.
Get her into a carrier and drive to the nearest vet at once. If she is dead, get her out of the dog’s sight.
Now, check your dog for tiny holes from the claws. A cat’s claws are like “dirty needles” that push germs deep under the fur.
If the skin starts to feel hot or swell up, you need the vet.
Report the Incident
Call animal control, the police, or the relevant local authority in your country. You need an official record of what happened.
If the cat owner decides to sue you or demands money later, that official report is your only protection.
Write down the exact date, time, and street location. If anyone saw the fight, get their phone numbers right there on the spot (people forget details or change their minds about getting involved).
A formal report isn’t about “justice” – it’s about having a paper trail that proves you took responsibility and followed the law.
Can a Sarplaninac Dog Kill the Cat?
My father and I discussed this matter and he believes it is unlikely. With their agility, speed, and tendency to scratch, cats are smart to stay safe in open spaces like yards or parks.
However, inside an apartment, there may be other factors like “jealous as a dog” or food that could trigger a sudden fight.
The real question is: Is your dog a true Sarplaninac? These dogs are known to be non-aggressive towards those weaker than themselves and only bark when there is a real reason.
That’s why it’s important to have a balanced dog by your side.
Conclusion
This is a situation that no owner ever wants to experience. It is a hard, heavy blow to see your dog in this light, and it takes time to process what happened.
Thank God, so far none of my dogs have ended up badly hurting a cat!
