7 Dangerous Houseplants for Dogs to Avoid!

Dogs, especially puppies, often chew on any leaves or stems they can reach. A single bite of a Sago Palm or a Peace Lily ends in a vet emergency.

Most owners buy houseplants without knowing that a common flower can burn a dog’s mouth wreck the liver.

I have put together this list of 7 dangerous houseplants that cause severe vomiting and organ failure.

Check every flower pot in your living room and move these plants to a different room before your puppy takes a bite.

1. Aloe Vera

You probably keep Aloe Vera for its healing gel, but this plant is a danger to your dog.

While the clear gel is mostly safe, the white sap right under the skin is toxic. If he chews on an Aloe leaf, it will likely vomit or have severe diarrhea within hours.

The dog will quickly get dehydrated from these symptoms. You will see he looking exhausted or refusing to eat.

Move your Aloe plants to a high shelf or a room the dog cannot enter. If you notice your puppy shaking or having dark urine after biting a leaf, call your vet immediately. [1]

2. Dieffenbachia (Dumb Cane)

Dieffenbachia is common in homes, but its sap works like tiny needles and burns the mouth of dogs instantly. If the puppy takes even one bite, it will start drooling heavily and rubbing its face with its paws.

The tongue and throat can swell so much that dogs struggle to breathe or swallow. You will see them vomiting or refusing to drink because of the pain.

Always wash your hands after touching the leaves, as the sap irritates your skin too. If a dog’s tongue looks swollen or blue, get to the vet immediately.

3. Philodendron

Most people have this plant hanging from shelves, but those long vines are a trap for a bored dog. If a pet bites a leaf, the sharp crystals inside will cut into his mouth like glass.

You will see him shaking his head or trying to wipe his tongue against the carpet to stop the stinging.

While this plant is rarely deadly, the swelling in the throat can happen fast and make breathing or swallowing very painful.

Give the dog some cold water or ice cubes to numb the burn, but watch his throat closely. Do not wait too long – if you see him gasping for air or if his tongue looks swollen, get him to the vet immediately.

To prevent this, trim the hanging vines so they stay well above your dog’s reach, even when he stands on hind legs.

4. Dracaena (Dragon Plant)

Saponins inside the long, pointy leaves of a Dracaena will turn a dog’s stomach into a “foam bath”. If dogs chew on the long, pointy leaves, they will start drooling and vomiting a foamy mess.

You will notice that they suddenly stop eating and just lie there, completely drained of energy.

The clearest sign of Dracaena poisoning is in the eyes – pupils will look huge and dark, even in a bright room.

While dogs might look like they are just “depressed,” their bodies are actually reacting to toxins that irritate the entire digestive tract.

Symptoms include drooling, vomiting (often with foam), diarrhea, and lethargy.

5. Sago Palm (Cycas revoluta)

Sago Palm is the most dangerous plant you can bring into a home with dogs. While the stiff, leathery leaves are toxic, the seeds carry the highest concentration of poison.

Vomiting and stomach bleeding are common symptoms of royal sago palm poisoning in pets. In more severe cases, it can cause blood problems, liver failure, and even death. [2]

Watch for yellowing in his gums or the whites of his eyes as the liver stops working. Because this plant leads to death in many cases, do not wait for symptoms to worsen. Get the dog to the vet in minutes if you even suspect he swallowed a seed.

The only safe way to have this plant is to keep it out of your home entirely.

6. Lilies (Lilium and Hemerocallis)

Lilies cause severe digestive upset in dogs, but remain a death sentence for cats.

Eating the petals or leaves leads to prolonged vomiting, diarrhea, and a painful, tucked-up abdomen. The stomach pain makes him turn away from food and sink into a heavy, dull state.

Watch for drooling or a sudden change in how much water he drinks.

The dog usually pulls through at the vet, but the cat that licks that yellow dust off its fur has kidneys that quit in two days.

7. Golden Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)

One bite of this vine and a dog’s mouth and tongue start burning like hell.

You’ll see drool hitting the floor and constant vomiting, and the throat can swell so fast that swallowing even a drop of spit is out of the question.

The dog will frantically paw at the face because of the stinging, and the tongue will turn red and puffy.

Flush the mouth with cold water immediately and get to the vet for a shot before the throat shuts.

Conclusion

Keeping these 7 dangerous plants out of the house is the only way to be 100% safe (or replace them with something dog-friendly).

I’ve seen how fast a curious pup can get into trouble, so don’t wait for a disaster to happen.
